Not 100% true. The Americans needed a "reason" to join the war in Europe so they offered themselves at Pearl Harbor. The most valuable ships were not there of course... The Japs took the bait and because the US went to war with Japan, Germany had to do the same and declare war on the US because of their Japanese allies. So yeah, the Americans this alliance to go to war with Germany and set foot on Europe. The more you know.
